Ruby Dee

Ruby Dee has been a long-time staple of the stage and screen. A member of the American Negro Theatre, her noted performances on Stage and film include “Ruthie” in A Raisin in the Sun opposite Sidney Poitier; “Lutiebell” in husband Ossie Davis’ satire Purlie Vicotorious, and Spike Lee’s Do the Right Thing. She and Mr. Davis also appeared together on CBS’ Touched By An Angel. Most recently, Dee played Mama Lucas in the film American Gangster, starring Denzel Washington. Dee is the author of My One Good Nerve, and the joint autobiography, With Ossie and Ruby: In This Life Together. She also has done a lot of innovative work with off-Broadway theatres. Dee and Davis are recipients of the national medal of arts awards bestowed at the White House by the President and Senator Clinton in 1995. In 2004, they became Kennedy Center Honors Award Winners.
